What is a Root Canal?
At the centre of the tooth, there is the natural canal/cavity where the tooth’s nerve lies. This is known as the root canal and the soft tissue/nerves within the root canal is called the pulp.
What is RCT?
Root canal treatment is primarily done to save a badly infected tooth. It relieves dental pain and is also a conservative treatment as removal of the infected tooth can be avoided. During root canal treatment, the dentist removes the pulp inside the tooth, cleans, disinfects and shapes the root canals, and places a bio-inert material in the root canal to seal the space. A crown is also provided on the tooth to strengthen it.

Patients with severe infection of the root, deeply decayed painful teeth, traumatized teeth, highly sensitive teeth. The enamel is abraded every time you brush. Due to vigorous brushing, the teeth will become overly sensitive to heat/cold. And once the enamel is eroded, the bacteria can easily attack the dentin and cause decay. A damaged pulp starts to break down as the bacteria begin to multiply within the pulp chamber. The debris along with the bacteria can cause an infection and lead to formation of abscess.
When the infection spreads beyond the ends of the roots of the tooth, a pus-filled pocket forms. This is an abscess. An untreated infection in the root canal can cause:
- Swelling spreading to the face, neck, or head.
- Loss of bone around the tip of the infected root.
- Sinus formation. The pus filled pocket may drain through the side of the tooth into the gums or through the cheek with drainage into the skin.
Why should you go for RCT?
Root canal treatment saves the tooth from extraction. The hot/cold sensation of the food and the pain we feel a tooth breaks is due to the nerves present in the teeth. Will a root canal hurt?

In order to relieve post-operative pain, and to get rid of the root infection (if any) the patient will be prescribed with a course of antibiotics and analgesics for a limited time period.
How long does the root canal treatment take to be completed : root canal treatment steps
A root canal treatment can be considered complete after the tooth is provided with a crown. The treatment is usually done in multiple appointments. The time period to complete a root canal treatment depends on the infection. Our endodontist will remove the infected pulp and may put a medication inside the tooth to clear it up. Sometimes, our endodontist may choose to seal the tooth the same day it is cleaned out. In between the appointments, a temporary cement is placed to prevent saliva or food particles from entering the cleaned root canal. A bio-inert material called gutta-percha is placed in the root canal and sealed with a paste. The tooth is restored with a permanent filling.
However, the final step involves further restoration of the tooth with a crown, a crown and post, to protect the tooth and prevent it from breaking, in order to restore it to full function. Until the final crown is fixed, it is advised to minimize chewing on the tooth that had undergone root canal treatment. This will prevent the fragile tooth from breaking and will help in avoid recontamination.
What to expect after a root canal treatment?
Some people might feel slight discomfort for a few days. However, it eventually fades and normalcy is restored. After the new crown is fixed the tooth can be used for chewing. The regular oral hygiene methods of brushing, flossing and mouthwash can be continued. Most people can get back to work right after a root canal treatment.
Complications of RCT
- Missed canal: Sometimes when an accessory canal is missed, the infection keeps progressing in that canal although the rest of the root canal are cleaned. In such cases, root canal can be repeated depending on the extension of the infection.
- Reinfection: A root canal treated tooth can get re-infected due to various reasons such as an undetected crack in the root of the tooth, inadequately filled root canal/breakdown of the filling material, defective restoration.
Alternative to RCT
Root canal treatment is the best option to save an infected tooth. However, if the tooth cannot be saved by RCT, extracting the tooth and replacing with an implant/bridge would be the next option. Without replacement of the tooth the adjacent teeth would migrate and result in crooked teeth and loss of bone in the extracted region.
Prevention of RCT
Prevention of any dental treatment is possible with maintaining good oral hygiene. Always make sure to brush twice, floss at least once daily and use mouthwash to prevent plaque accumulation and development of caries. However, do not brush very hard as it would result in the abrasion of the enamel and thus, resulting in extreme sensitivity. Also, use of toothpaste with fluoride can prevent caries formation.
